David Laʻamea Kalākaua was elected King of Hawaiʻi in 1874. He was determined to secure his countryʻs world status, recruit plantation workers, and discover the innovations and wonders of the world.
On January 20, 1881, King Kalākaua, in his Royal Party of four, departed Hawaiʻi on the steamship City of Sydney. They headed first to San Francisco, then boarded the Oceanic heading West to Japan, the early part of a 281 day World Tour.
We are retracing this journey!
Instead of one long voyage we are following the trek in several 30 day trips.
We will post updates during the world tour, video clips via YouTube, and finally compose a full length documentary Film.
HAWAIʻI
Our voyage begins from our Homeland.
Huakaʻi is our Hawaiian word for a journey, a voyage, especially one with purpose. This trip more than 140 years ago was not a vacation for King Kalākaua nor for us as we follow in his footsteps. The idea of a vacation is modern and we made new words to describe this - wā hoʻomaha, hoʻomahana, maha. They relate to a time for rest, or without work. Kaʻapuni means to circuit, encircle, to go around - thus a tour, and Kaʻapuni Honua means world tour, especially as a circumnavigation.
HUAKAʻI root words are:
Kaʻi - to lead, venture forward, to enter a stage
Hua - fruit, fruitful, produce, egg
Thus Huakaʻi is a fruitful journey and we feel a strong name to describe this voyage project.
Huakaʻi Honua - World Journey
A World tour discovering history, art and aloha.
