ALOHA

David H. Kalama Jr

Executive Producer of Huaka'i Project and President of Kalama Productions, Inc.

My company has been involved in many ground breaking productions based on Hawaiian and Polynesian culture.  We are excited for this new journey.

I got inspired with the idea from reading some Hawaiian Language newspapers of the 1880s.

THE JOURNEY

There are quite a lot of logistical elements to prepare for, designing a travel system, recruit travel partners and secure funding.  The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed our scheduling and adapting has become a normal function.

The World Journey - Kaʻapunihonua - will be accomplished in several 30 day jaunts over two years.  Kalākaua traveled by the means available at that time - walking, horse, carriage,  steam powered train and sail-(often steam assisted).  We will employ those methods and adding modern venues of automobiles, aircraft, cruise and other ships, diesel & electric trains, trolleys, scooters and bicycles.  Although bicycles were invented as early as the 1860s, they were not mass produced for the public until the late 1880s.  But it is possible the King saw a few in France and England.

I will start off by making a few journeys solo to get the project going, as filmmaker, storyteller and tour guide.  We will not exactly follow the same travel sequence due to regional and weather issues, but will follow a similar path.  In certain cases we will be in areas that were skipped by the King and we may decide to visit and report on these locations as appropriate.

Joined by a cameraman on most of the trips we will hire assistance locally in each area.  We may need to split-up on a couple legs for increased efficiency, filming two sections on our own.  We will acquire the bulk of our footage but will license footage, music and other elements from area experts when feasible.

We return from each 30 day jaunt to edit our YouTube and Blog updates and feed into the larger Film project.  We will give periodic in-field, ie: onsite, reports, during each area trip.
